Alpine Residence

Natural slate, composed around an intricate roof.

THE PROJECT

One roof.
Many changing forms.

At this Alpine residence, Maultz Construction’s slate work extends across broad roof planes, steep turrets and closely spaced dormers. The roof is a defining part of the stone architecture: its texture and proportions carry from the largest slopes to the smallest pointed roof.

For a home with this much detail, choosing slate is only the beginning. The installation has to resolve how courses turn around a curve, meet a hip and continue alongside a dormer. Those decisions give the finished roof its coherence.

CURVES & COURSES

The layout changes
with the architecture.

A conical turret narrows with every course toward its peak. The slate arrangement must respond to that changing circumference while maintaining an orderly pattern. Adjoining dormers and roof planes introduce their own proportions and junctions.

The rounded slate edges on the turrets and the pronounced texture of the larger roof fields give this residence a distinct character. Carrying that character through different shapes requires attention to individual pieces as well as the overall layout.

THE COMPLETE ASSEMBLY

Consider the connections.

This slate project also brings together upper standing-seam roof areas, roof edges and changes in pitch. Where those surfaces meet, the connection deserves as much consideration as the visible material.

When discussing a complex slate roof, we look beyond the choice of stone. How will the courses meet the surrounding architecture? How will water move through the roof’s junctions? How will adjoining materials be coordinated? These are central questions in planning a roof that belongs to the building.
